"Are there any sheep?!?"
2002-11-14
It was a grey november morning. A light rain wetted Kims black fur as he spotted the sheep. Every muscle in his body got tensed, every fiber vibrated... His ears were on top as he ran off at high speed towards the flock, with the Poodles not far behind.
The calmness on the large field in the valley surrounded by hills and a deep forest was gone. The nervous sheep gathered together, but the escape way to their safe home was blocked by those three onrushing small dogs.
Kim reached them first and rounded them nicely, just as a Border Collie would have done in a fetch. The herd started to move, closely together, but in the wrong direction. As they turned, they met the two Toy Poodles. For one second the scene froze. The sheep watched the dogs who stood in their way and the Poodles starred at the huge mass of white wool, and quickly decided to return to the safety with me, leaving the sheep their escape way open.
But Kim was faster, he plunged right into the herd, splitting them up in all directions. As they
packed up again, he had actually managed to separate five sheep from the rest, which he now drove in my direction!
Not for long though, the sheep soon outsmarted this beginner herding Sheltie, but Kim didn't give up. He followed them over the hills at full speed, but returned happily to me when I got out of his sight and whistled for him.
I was so proud, I will never forget the scene where Kim worked together with my two Poodles herding!
