The Shetland Sheepdog comes in a variety of coatcolours, many refer to them as a "rainbow of colours". Why not give your friend a suitable name that tells a little about him?
Golden sable

Shaded sable To start with the sable, that is the most common colour and ranges from light pale sable to dark mahogany red. The really pale Sheltie reminds me of summer and beach adventures, so I'd call her Sandy. This colour is common in Europe, but not in USA for some reason.

Red sable More natural to find "over there" is the sparkling red sable. Many people find them resembling a fox, that is why Foxy is a popular choice. But why not call him Zorro instead, that is the spanish word for fox!

Some sables are of pure gold, naturally I'd choose the name Goldie for her. Another great choice is Honey, from what the bees are leaving behind. I saved my favourite to the last: the shaded sable. And ofcourse his name is Shadow, what else?

Mahogany sable

Tricolour Over to the tri's, that should have a shiny black coat with no traces of rustiness. I found it difficult to find some good names here, but I started with some names telling it's a tri we're dealing with. I'd call her Trisha and him Tristan. Since there are three colours in the tri's, another great name is Trinity, for both him and her (if you don't know what that word means, look it up in the dictionary, it is cool!).

Bi-black The english word for really, really charcoal black is jet-black, so her name could also be Jetta. If your Sheltie is blessed with heavy, beautiful and desirable tan-markings, I would call her Tanya to point that out.

The black and white (am. bi-black) girl can ofcourse also be named Jetta, or Blackie for him. But if you want a little different name, there is Raven. A raven is a clever bird that is so black it shimmers in blue. Cool name, hu? Chess is also nice from the colours of the chessboard.

Here is the word Black in some countries if you want to puzzle a name together by yourself: Svart (Sweden), Sort (Norway), Schwarz (Germany), Noir (France), Siram (Thailand, not sure about spelling or pronouncing though).

Blue merle

Blue merle And the blue merle: My favourite name for him is definitely Merlin! The merles are silvery blue splashed and marbled with black, but the main impression should always be blue, so Bluey is a nice name for her, don't you think? You can also focus on the black markings, and call him or her Dot. Chrystal is another beautiful name for the girl merle, but if you want a tougher name, call him Mercury!
Bi-blue

Tri with blaze So far the colours. But perhaps your Sheltie has an unusual or lovely white marking, or something else to identify him by? If he has a broad blaze in the face, call him Blaze or Blesi, that is the same thing in Iceland. If the blaze is only a thin line, Strimman is a suitable name. That is swedish for stripe. Maybe your Sheltie has a white star in the face, then the icelandic word Stjarni is nice.

Good luck choosing a name for your Sheltie puppy!

Readers suggestions:
One of the visitors suggested the beautiful name Cinnamon after the spice with a resembling colour to sable...

I looked over your names for Shelties on your web page. You asked for any more suggestions for names. My suggestion is different. I wanted some first name to fit him, and checked Scottish first names. The name Tyree, which I gave him, was said to mean "Island Dweller". /John Speck

Sadly my male sheltie of 15 years passed away. I never had a problem naming him... I saw him at the pet store and thought "Sheltie" was a cute and unique name. I registered him King Sheltiehaus after his parents. (King Vanita Heatwave and Sheltiehaus Legend of Spot). You might want to add "Sheltie" to your list of suggestions as I think it is a great name. Very nice and fitting. /Sue Lumsden

Xena is great for a blue merle or tri. Xena the warrior Princess was black and white with blue eyes. Our girl was 13 year old blue merle tri girl.

Cute bi-blue puppy!
